Today, many schools and teachers, focused on high achievement goals within an exam-oriented environment, struggle to discuss global education. The concept of “globalization” is often seen as a theoretical idea, and the world of education hasn’t been able to progress as quickly as the business world when it comes to giving students a “global” perspective. In fact, coming together with students from different regions of the world should go beyond a mere virtual meeting and evolve into a deeper learning experience where students genuinely understand different cultures and perspectives.
What Is the Role of Globalization in Education?
As British Dil Okulları, we believe that gaining a global perspective starts with the smallest steps. Globalization in education is not only about a broad vision, but also a personal process that each student begins within their own cultural context. While globalization in the business world began years ago, education has yet to experience progress at the same pace. However, an education with a global perspective doesn’t just prepare students to become part of the workforce; it turns them into globally aware, well-rounded individuals.
The first step in creating a global curriculum is understanding the local and cultural context. Although education shows slower progress compared to fields like trade and technology, this slower pace also offers an opportunity for the education system to undergo a meaningful transformation. In this transformation, it’s also important for families to participate more actively in their children’s educational journey. It’s a reality that systems which separate education from local culture also distance families from this process; however, a global perspective can make families’ role in the educational process more active.
Defining Global Learning
The word “global” is often associated with business, marketing, and technology, and requires particular care when used in education. As British Dil Okulları, we use the term “global” specifically to mean having worldwide awareness and application. A global curriculum involves students gaining knowledge about different cultures and learning to respect different perspectives.
A curriculum consists of learning content and experiences based on a specific plan. The concept of a “global curriculum,” however, is not just about content; it is also a learning journey that increases students’ cross-cultural awareness of the world and encourages multifaceted thinking. In this context, the goal of global learning in education is for students to go beyond borders and gain a broad perspective.
As British Dil Okulları, our aim is to provide our students not only with language education but also with an education that helps them feel like citizens of the world. To this end, we integrate a global perspective into our education, enabling our students to connect with the world and develop their ability to understand different cultures. In doing so, we aim to go beyond language learning and help our students become individuals who can express themselves in both local and global settings.
