Of course, clichéd answers like “Everyone needs education these days” don’t explain inner motivation in depth. Our students shouldn’t join a school or course just because “everyone else is doing it.” Because students who join learning only for external reasons can’t truly connect with the learning process, and often just attend classes “to have gone.”
Students preparing for high school or university, on the other hand, often say, “I need to succeed in my classes in order to get into a good university.” This can be a powerful source of motivation to a certain extent. However, at British Dil Okulları, we want our students to be here not just to move on to the next stage, but to develop themselves, broaden their horizons, and discover the true meaning of learning.
Questions about motivation can often be divided into two main categories: intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. As Dan Pink discusses in his book ‘Drive,’ extrinsic and intrinsic motivations are not the same. In traditional education systems, extrinsic motivators (grades and exam results) are usually prioritized. However, students seeking meaning beyond grades or certificates need intrinsic motivation more. Intrinsic motivation ensures our students are filled with a genuine desire for language learning and cultural enrichment, not just a wish to complete a course.
